The operational high performance FORTRAN (HPF) compilation system was introduced. The overview of the system organization was described and the key techniques employed in implementation of the system, such as distributed array descriptor, class library, communication classification and detection, data mapping mode and equivalent semantic transformation, were presented. the functions of analysis and transformation of the programs were discussed and some code fragments generated by the compiler were given. The results of performance testing for Laplace equation, as an example, were displayed.EI0160-671
