The spatiotemporal transformation of a focused femtosecond laser pulse during nonlinear propagation in fused silica was investigated numerically. We found that the on-axis intensity of the pulse experiences a shortening of pulse duration, formation of a double peak and then an evolution to one peak as a result of the interplay of plasma-induced defocusing, self-focusing and diffraction. By contrast, the temporal profile of the space integrated power of the pulse retains the initial shape but with a slight depletion due to the nonlinear loss.
