A quantitative model was developed to predict the contributions of various pathways of taking up polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) into leaves of three evergreen tree species, including soil-root-leaf pathway, soil-air-leaf pathway, and gaseous deposition. The contributions of soil-root-leaf pathway were negligible for PBDE accumulation in leaves. Soil-air-leaf pathway accounted for 16.3% and 3.8% of the total BDE-28 and BDE-47 levels in leaves, respectively; but for the PBDE congeners with log K-AW <= -4 and log K-OA > 11, this pathway was ignorable.
