A new zero-magnetization ferromagnet (ZMF), SmNiAlH1.17, was synthesized by hydrogenation from SmNiAl. Our experiments demonstrated that SmNiAlH1.17 is the ZMF of Sm compound obtained by intercalating a non-magnetic element H. The Curie temperature of SmNiAlH1.17 is T-c similar to 75 K and the compensation temperature is T-comp similar to 38 K, at which the orbital contribution to the magnetic moment is balanced out by the spin one. The large magnetocrystalline anisotropy of SmNiAlH1.17 results in a tremendous diamagnetic effect in the field cooling temperature dependent magnetization, M-Fc(T), at T < T-comp.
