Emissivity is an important consideration for temperature measurement through infrared imaging. The theoretical background depicting the role of emissivity and other significant parameters for temperature measurement with the help of an infrared camera is discussed. Experiment is carried out for estimating the emissivity of oxide coated steel surface and rusted iron surface with the help of a long wave infrared camera and using a reference surface of known higher emissivity. The measured emissivity values are subjected to statistical analysis and the final estimated value is compared with the published value. The effect of the difference between estimated value and published value of emissivity on the measured temperature is also discussed
