This article explains how to build a peaceful (sakinah) family in the Javanese wedding traditions and rituals of Surakarta and Yogyakarta Palaces. This theme is important because most of Javanese people do not understand the philosophical and ethical values of building a peaceful family as it is reflected in the traditions and rituals. Saki>nah, which means a peaceful family, is the final destination of a marriage as showed in Javanese marital traditions and rituals. The tradition of nontoni is a symbol of knowing each other (ta’aruf) between the bride and the groom.
