The end of the Cold War is generally regarded as a prelude to the German armed forces’ worldwide involvement, beginning in 1992 with the UN missions in Somalia and Cambodia. This overlooks the fact that from 1959 onwards, the Bundeswehr took part in at least 135 relief operations abroad, both inside NATO territory and beyond, in places including Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Peru. The article examines the reasons for this remarkable effort and illustrates the logic behind the involvement. The Bundeswehr itself emphasised service to humanity as its central motivation.
