This article intends to discuss socioeconomic patterns of women who entered the Convent of Ajuda in Rio de Janeiro, comparing them to the women’s profile belonging to segments of the elite of colonial society. After that, analyzes the institutional aspects of life in the cloister, focusing also some evidence of disruption of regular rules. Finally, dedicated to investigate evidence of religious devotion among the nuns of Ajuda
