Synergy and Contradictions between Wood Production and Ecosystem Services Supplied to Society – The Case of Private Forests

Today, private foresters earn their income almost exclusively from the sale of wood, with a turnover of 105 €/ha. Ecosystem services could generate a value of 970€/ha/year, i.e. eight times the forestry income derived from timber. The question therefore arises: can these services supplement forest income or do they interfere with the production of wood? Foresters are faced with choices that are becoming increasingly complex, uncertain, risky and sometimes conflicting. They are of several kinds: legal, economic, environmental, social, technical, climatic, etc. Are they in a position to produce timber using appropriate silvicultural techniques while at the same time providing the services that society is demanding? Faced with these new challenges, what is the guidance that should be given to foresters? To develop messages that make sense to foresters, the Forestiers privés de France private owners federation and the CNPF (National Centre for Forest Property) conducted a survey on forest owners called the RÉSOFOP.Aujourd’hui, le forestier privé retire son revenu quasiment exclusivement de la vente du bois, équivalent à un chiffre d’affaires de 105 euros/ ha. Les services écosystémiques génèreraient une valorisation de 970 euros/ ha/an, soit 8 fois le revenu bois de la forêt. La question qui se pose alors : Ces services viennentils compléter le revenu forestier ? Ou bien viennent-ils contrarier la production de bois ? Le forestier est placé aujourd’hui devant des choix qui deviennent de plus en plus complexes, incertains, risqués, voire contradictoires. Ils sont de plusieurs ordres : juridique, économique, environnemental, social, technique, climatique… Peut-il produire du bois, et mener la sylviculture adaptée tout en assurant les services que la société demande ? Face aux nouveaux défis, comment le forestier peut-il s’orienter ? Pour élaborer des messages qui soient audibles par les forestiers, la fédération « Forestiers privés de France » et le Centre national de la propriété forestière ont réalisé une enquête auprès de propriétaires forestiers : le RÉSOFOP
