Carbon Markets – An Opportunity for the World’s Forests?

Forests cover 30% of the land surface and contain more than half of the carbon stored in terrestrial ecosystems. Carbon credits can be used to compensate the environmental service provided by forests. The sale of carbon credits could be a lever to steer investment. Demand for credits in the forestry sector remains relatively small. However, negotiations directed at a post-Kyoto agreement may create a context that is more favourable to forestry projects by reinstating the question of including forests at the core of the global fight against climate change.Les forêts couvrent 30 % de la surface émergée, et renferment plus de la moitié du carbone accumulé par les écosystèmes terrestres. Les crédits carbone peuvent rémunérer ce service environnemental que fournissent les forêts : la vente de crédits carbone pourrait constituer un levier à l’investissement. La demande en crédits forestiers reste toutefois relativement restreinte. Cependant, les négociations en vue d’un accord post- Kyoto pourraient rendre le contexte plus favorable aux projets forestiers en réintégrant la question de l’inclusion des forêts au coeur du dispositif global de lutte contre le changement climatique
