The analysis of international meat and livestock trade is a complex task, and any summary review of world exchanges is necessarily over-simplistic. Although this trade is highly regulated and extremely sensitive to health scares and exchange rate movements, it has nevertheless grown significantly over the past 18 years. Cattle and beef exchanges are currently estimated to represent 13% of world production, with similar results achieved by the ovine industry.
