The epidemiology of rabies has changed during the recent years. The control and the elimination of rabies in autochtonous terrestrial non flying animals has been achieved in West European countries. However, emerging or re-emerging lyssavirus variants have been identified and lead to the developments of unexpected and unassessed risks for public health.
