Discussing the moral acceptability of the experimental procedures used by researchers raises the question of acceptable use of animals for experiments. Good practices (the right way to do something) must be distinguished from ethics (legitimacy of the decision to do so). Good practices have been introduced gradually over the past ten years, soon followed by the emergence of ethical questions. Growing awareness of the importance of ethical considerations led public research institutions to create in 2000 regional ethics committees for animal experimentation.
