The Yew tree (taxus baccata L.) in Austria

The Austrian University of Agronomy (Boku) has worked on reinstating a species that nearly disappeared from Austrian forests: the common yew (Taxus baccata L.). Most stands are now protected. Through genetic investigation, Austrian researchers have attempted to trace the history of this species, which for millennia has been associated with human beings. But far from wanting to keep its genetic heritage behind closed doors in repositories, the Institute wishes to restore the yew to its rightful place in forest stands. By devising appropriate silvicultural strategies, foresters could relearn how to grow this noble species and, perhaps, one day, meet renewed demand from various sectors for this hard, flexible, valuable and eminently modern wood.L’université autrichienne d’agronomie (Boku) travaille à la revalorisation d’une essence qui a bien failli disparaître des forêts autrichiennes : l’If commun (Taxus baccata L.), dont la plupart des peuplements sont aujourd’hui classés. À travers des études génétiques, les chercheurs autrichiens essaient de retracer l’histoire de cette essence liée à l’homme depuis des millénaires. Toutefois, loin de chercher à geler son patrimoine dans des conservatoires, l’institut compte bien réattribuer à l’If la place qu’il mérite dans les peuplements. En élaborant des stratégies sylvicoles adaptées, les gestionnaires forestiers pourraient réapprendre à cultiver cette essence noble et — qui sait ? — répondre à nouveau un jour à la demande de plusieurs filières pour ce bois dur et souple d’une grande valeur et d’une incroyable modernit
