Spectral measurements of downwelling irradiance and upwelling radiance between 400 and 720 m are briefly described. The results are presented. Spatial variations were measured from an aircraft above a section in the Balgzand region employing an Optical Multichannel Analyser system. The temporal variations were observed from a measuring tower using a 11 channel radiometer. Samples of the seawater and of the surface of the tidal flat were taken simultaneously with the optical measurements and later analysed in labaratory. The concentrations of chlorophyll and pheopigments, suspended particulate matter and of fluorescent dissolved material were determined.
