The European Union is a focal point for reflections and political initiatives in the area of biodiversity: the Birds directive, the Habitats directive, fauna, flora, position in respect of the convention on biological diversity. The Commission, Council and European Parliament hope to serve as examples and further an ambition in this area that do not target forests alone but have major consequences for forest policy. Echoing the Community strategy for biodiversity (June 2011), the new French strategy for biodiversity (May 2011), in which forests are a space and implementing theme, as well as an area for intensifying partnerships.
