An investigation on a European scale has been undertaken to analyse the consequences of abandonment and woody colonisation in semi-natural habitats used in extensive farming (heathland, grassland and meadows) and habitats more heavily influenced by human activity (cultivated fields). Changes in vegetation in each habitat were analyzed on the basis of various stages of abandonment. Results show that, although vegetation composition is very different between stages, the successional pathways defined on the basis of functional traits are convergent for all habitats.
