Agricultural abandonment and colonisation by woody-plants - Potential consequences for vegetation in various european ecosystems

An investigation on a European scale has been undertaken to analyse the consequences of abandonment and woody colonisation in semi-natural habitats used in extensive farming (heathland, grassland and meadows) and habitats more heavily influenced by human activity (cultivated fields). Changes in vegetation in each habitat were analyzed on the basis of various stages of abandonment. Results show that, although vegetation composition is very different between stages, the successional pathways defined on the basis of functional traits are convergent for all habitats. The semi-natural habitats are however distinguishable from the cultivated field, particularly during the initial stages, for certain traits and display a significant loss in heritage species. Management options for these environments are discussed.Un travail à l’échelle européenne a été entrepris pour analyser les conséquences de l’abandon et de la colonisation ligneuse dans des habitats semi-naturels utilisés de façon extensive (landes, pelouses, prairies) ou des habitats plus fortement anthropisés (champs cultivés). Dans chaque habitat les changements de végétation ont été analysés en fonction des différents stades d’abandon. Les résultats montrent que, bien que la composition de la végétation change fortement entre les stades, les trajectoires de la succession définies sur la base des traits fonctionnels sont convergentes pour tous les habitats. Les habitats semi-naturels se distinguent néanmoins des champs cultivés, notamment dans les premiers stades, pour certains traits et enregistrent une perte forte des espèces patrimoniales. Les options de gestion de ces milieux sont enfin discutées
