Impact of Ancient Human Activity on Biodiversity in a Montane Beech-Fir Habitat

Several studies have shown the considerable impact effect of ancient human activity on the forests of the Pyrenees, affecting the boundaries and spatial location of stands, and their species composition. Two of the most noticeable effects are the almost universal rarefaction of silver fir and, more locally, the substitution of the potential montane beech-fir forest by mixed sessile oak-birch stands. In a test forest, we tried to assess the impact of these changes on taxonomic biodiversity. 1- In a beech-fir stand left unmanaged for about a century, a survey of tree microhabitats shows silver fir to be less accommodating than beech. The insect and fungal associations for the two species are different, and are abundant for fir in some groups. Rarefaction of silver fir has therefore probably reduced the overall taxonomic diversity of beech-fir stands. 2- In a sessile oak stand of the montane belt, sampling of saproxylic beetle and syrphid populations revealed the presence of very few uncommon insects while the successions are much impoverished by comparison with those of oak stands in the collinean belt. On the other hand, 60 % of bats observed in the forest studied were encountered in the oak stands. The conclusion reached is that, in the montane belt of the Pyrenees, beech and fir should be allowed to spontaneously re-colonize oak stands while silver fir should be encouraged to repopulate beech stands.Plusieurs études ont montré la forte incidence de l’anthropisation ancienne des massifs forestiers pyrénéens sur les limites et la répartition spatiale des peuplements forestiers, ainsi que sur leur composition spécifique. Parmi les effets les plus remarquables, ces études constatent la raréfaction quasi générale du Sapin pectiné et, plus localement, la substitution d’une chênaie sessiliflore à Bouleaux à la hêtraie-sapinière potentielle. Sur une forêt test, nous avons tenté d’appréhender l’impact de ces transformations sur la biodiversité taxonomique. Dans une hêtraie-sapinière non exploitée depuis environ un siècle, l’étude des microhabitats liés aux arbres montre que le Sapin pectiné est moins pourvoyeur que le Hêtre. Les entomocénoses et mycocénoses liées aux deux essences sont différentes, et sont abondantes pour le Sapin dans certains groupes. La raréfaction du Sapin pectiné a ainsi probablement réduit la diversité taxonomique globale des hêtraies sapinières. Dans une chênaie sessiliflore de l’étage montagnard, l’échantillonnage des communautés de Coléoptères saproxyliques et de Diptères Syrphidés ne révèle la présence que d’un faible nombre d’insectes originaux et les cortèges observés sont très appauvris par rapport à ceux des chênaies collinéennes. Par contre, 60 % des espèces de Chiroptères présentes sur la forêt test ont été contactées dans la chênaie. En conclusion, nous préconisons, à l’étage montagnard des Pyrénées, de laisser évoluer naturellement la recolonisation spontanée des chênaies par le Hêtre et le Sapin et de favoriser la reconquête des hêtraies par le Sapin pectiné
