A prerequisite to preventing forest soil acidification is to adopt an integrated approach to wood harvesting taking into account the nutrient stocks in the soils. The increasing demand for wood as biomass leads to utilization of leftover wood that would have otherwise been left on the ground. As a result, there is a strong increase in the export of nutrients arising from felling. This practise should therefore be discontinued in the longer term except on well-endowed soils and providing some precautions are taken.
