Preventing acidification of forests soils - Risks associated with harvesting wood for energy

A prerequisite to preventing forest soil acidification is to adopt an integrated approach to wood harvesting taking into account the nutrient stocks in the soils. The increasing demand for wood as biomass leads to utilization of leftover wood that would have otherwise been left on the ground. As a result, there is a strong increase in the export of nutrients arising from felling. This practise should therefore be discontinued in the longer term except on well-endowed soils and providing some precautions are taken.La prévention de l’acidification des sols forestiers suppose en premier lieu le raisonnement des récoltes de bois au regard des réserves nutritives des sols. La demande croissante de bois-énergie incite notamment à l’exploitation des menus bois jusqu’ici laissés au sol (rémanents). Cependant cette pratique accroît fortement l’exportation d’éléments nutritifs liée à une coupe. Elle ne peut donc être durable que sur des sols bien approvisionnés en nutriments et moyennant certaines précautions
