In this chapter, after reviewing the treatment of stuttering in the scientific literature, we shall discuss how the speech impairment of stuttering is represented in popular media (with a special focus on feature fi lms) and in the written medium, including both literature and subtitling, which, however different, may share the same representational graphic conventions. Examples of renditions of stuttering both on page and on screen provide us with a contextual framework for the analysis of its various external communicative functions in our dataset
