This article discusses the language policy in the Netherlands between 1795 and 2015. Special attention is given to the period of the French occupation and the subsequent extended Kingdom of the Netherlands (and Belgium) till 1830. In addition the Dutch attitude towards Frisian is discussed. Also a short paragraph is devoted to the position of Dutch in Flanders. Moreover the political aspects towards the adoption of a standard Dutch orthography are mentioned in an interlude
