When enamel, dentine and substances in caries lesions are exposed to (laser) light of a specific colour, fluorescence may be induced. This principle is at the basis of two caries diagnostic methods, DIAGNOdent and Quantitative Laser (Light-induced) Fluorescence (QLF). Only the DIAGNOdent is commercially available. Bacterial porphyrins evoke fluorescence when illuminated with red light and the intensity of the emitted light is related to the size of the caries lesion.
