In this introduction, a general overview of the role of biomass as an alternative source of chemicals and fuels will be given. In particular, the contribution of the cluster of excellence “Tailor Made Fuel from Biomass (TMFB)” will be briefly described. Levulinic acid (LA) has been identified by the cluster as an important intermediate for the production of biofuels. Thus, after pointing out the importance of LA, an extensive overview as well as a general assessment of the existing processes for its production from biomass feedstock will be provided.
