This article presents recent data on the extent of the drinking-driving problem in the Netherlands. It gives an overview of the changes in the frequency of DWI (driving while intoxicated) offences since 1970, relevant demographic data, and how government policy has tried to cope with the problem. A large number of studies have been performed in The Netherlands by various research institutes, including SWOV, most of which have been published only in Dutch and are reported in this paper.
