International audienceThe Quaternary period is characterized by stronger climatic oscillations than during the Paleogene and the Neogene. The variations in rhythmicity and amplitude of these oscillations are reflected in the Eurasian terrestrial biomes, and indirectly on the fauna communities (including Human) living in the Palearctic zone. A marked transition takes place between the Early and the Middle Pleistocene. In France, the first settlements are contemporaneous with the Epivillafranchian biochron, associated with the late Early Pleistocene.
