The purpose of this paper is to present some ideas on the connection between mixed forests and biodiversity through a number of examples, and to underscore the relevance of the community ecology concepts to the study of these forests. The emphasis is put on Lawton’s analysis, identifying three levels: the population level (i.e., the management unit for which concepts and models exist), the macro-ecology level (where statistical regularities can be shown), and the local community level, by far the most difficult to study.
