Kentucky has the highest rate of childhood obesity in the nation. In communities where rural residents have limited (if any) access to physical activity opportunities, the prevalence of obesity is higher. If unaddressed, previous research has show that these obesity rates due to sedentary lifestyles can contribute to higher levels of heart disease, type II diabetes, and cancer. In efforts to address this problem, five primary schools in Meade County, Kentucky participated in a pilot intervention, Coordinated Approach To Children’s Health (CATCH) Kids Club, with the goal of improving children’s health knowledge, skills, and behaviors.
