Misconceptions pose significant barriers to learning and lead to shallow understanding for students. A literature review of gas law misconceptions was conducted in order to identify common misconceptions held by students on the properties of gases. A set of 80 misconceptions identified from the literature was classified into 16 different categories which included assimilation, understanding formulas, and the particulate nature of gas. Gas questions were served on tests and quizzes administered to students enrolled in general chemistry classes at Northern Kentucky University and California State University, Fullerton.
