Despite the increasing prevalence of asthma in Viet Nam, the country has limited means for respiratory function testing. A previous study using the forced oscillation technique suggested lower respiratory resistance between French and Vietnamese children at 10 years but not 6 years of age. If the hypothesis of a significant ethnic difference in airway caliber is correct, then similar differences should exist at adult age. To test the hypothesis, a plethysmographic study was set up to measure airway resistance and specific airway resistance in healthy young adults in France and Viet Nam.
