Le catholicisme matériel : les objets de la piété privée dans la France des XVIè et XVIIè siècles.

This work is situated at the intersection of material History and the History of Individuals. It also borrows from sociology and ethnology by resorting to personal piety objects as witnesses of the religious and cultural practices of Catholics in modern France (including territories located across the Atlantic) up to the Edict of Fontainebleau. These objects begin appearing in Catholics? private lives as of the end of the 15th century. During the following century, this process speeds up with the impact of the Protestant Reformation and the implementation of the Catholic Reformation. The study of their means of manufacture and distribution first shows how easily they can be obtained. As they are accessible to all classes, they belong to the familiar and daily lives of the faithful. Their relative banality is transcended by the appropriation made by the believer. Thus, as a self-defining sign, they are part of the self-image of the individuals. They represent a stake in patriotic claim during times of political disturbances and also play an essential role in the setting up of strategies of social and religious distinction. Signs of recognition and factors of cohesion of a Catholic society shaken by the Protestant Reformation, these objects constitute above all a medium of prayer. The faithful, following the guidance of the clerics, resort to them to domesticate the sacred in order to establish an intimate relationship with God. These personal practices, sometimes close to superstitious deviances, highlight the role of the object as an agent of the building of individual identity during modern times that widely exceeds the strict frame of religious sphere.Ce travail s'inscrit au croisement de l'Histoire matérielle et de l'Histoire de l'individu mais emprunte également à la sociologie et à l'ethnologie en plaçant les objets de la piété privée au coeur d'une réflexion sur les pratiques religieuses et culturelles des populations catholiques dans le royaume de France (extensions Outre-Atlantique comprises) jusqu'à l'Edit de Fontainebleau. C'est à la fin du XVe siècle que ces objets commencent à pénétrer l'espace privé des croyants, un processus qui s'accélère au siècle suivant avec l'affirmation de la Réforme protestante et la mise en oeuvre de la Réforme Catholique. L'étude de leurs conditions de fabrication et de diffusion montre tout d'abord combien ils sont faciles à se procurer. Accessibles à toutes les bourses, ils font partie de l'univers familier et quotidien des fidèles. C'est leur mode d'appropriation qui transcende cette relative banalité. Ainsi, en tant que signe identitaire, ils participent à la représentation de soi : enjeux de la revendication patriotique lors des périodes de troubles politiques, ils jouent également un rôle important dans la mise en place de stratégies de distinction sociale et religieuse. Signes de reconnaissance et facteurs de cohésion d'une société catholique ébranlée par la Réforme, ces objets constituent enfin, et avant tout, des supports de prière par lesquels, sous l'impulsion des clercs, le fidèle parvient à domestiquer le sacré pour établir une relation intime avec Dieu. Ces pratiques personnelles, parfois déviantes, soulignent le rôle de l'objet comme agent de la construction de l'identité individuelle à l'époque moderne, lequel dépasse largement le cadre strict de la sphère religieuse
