183 pedunculate oaks from a full-sib family were exposed for one year to 380 or 680 vpm [CO2] in glasshouses. Gas exchanges and growth were measured at several dates. Biochemical measurements on the photosynthetic apparatus and discrimination against 13C were also determined. The general stimulation of the trees growth under elevated [CO2] is associated with higher water use efficiency linked to a lowered stomatal conductance. Photosynthesis is stimulated for a moment although the nitrogen is clearly redirected to other physiological processes.
