The face as a battlefield

This paper discusses the faces of actors and non-actors filmed between 1911 and 1980 in what now constitutes the state of Israel. What can be said about almost a century of close-ups? Does the evolution of the faces shown by Hebrew cinema, before and after the creation of the state of Israel, help us understand the interaction between aesthetic criteria and ideological choices? Faces shown in close-up could be seen as so many mirrors. What do these faces say about the culture which, by selecting them, adopted them as its emblems? Has the young Israeli culture been able, so far, to address, in cinematographic terms, the question of its own identity?Cet article s'intéresse aux visages filmés entre 1911 et 1980, dans ce qui constitue maintenant l'Etat d'Israël. Que reste-t-il, si l'on s'en tient aux gros plans, et aux cadrages serrés, de près d'un siècle d'Histoire ? Peut-on, à partir de l'évolution des visages montrés par le cinéma hébreu, avant et après l'établissement de l'Etat d'Israël, dégager le va-et-vient qui s'instaure entre des choix idéologiques et des critères esthétiques ? Ces visages seront ici interrogés comme on utilise un miroir. Que disent-ils de la culture, qui, en les filmant, les a pris comme emblèmes ?
