Television research has consistently skipped the difficult issue of cultural quality. The current assaults on public service television, and the need to prevent certain types of programs from altogether disappearing under market pressures, make it impossible for television students to skip this issue any longer. Reviewing a number of recent formulations of "cultural quality" Schroder discusses among others, Bourdieu's distinction between "pure" taste, and "barbarian" taste.
