This article considers the nature of rituals and political symbols in our societies. The author proposes to confront different approaches to these phenomena, one point of view being to highlight the sociological determinants of political rituals. The conceptual framework for this approach is one in which political representation appears as an alienating and mystifying form. A second point of view consists of examining the symoblic work rituals accomplish.
