This article presents the result of a collective research project carried out by French, Japanese and American teams into national stereotypes transmitted by the television of each country about the two others. The author discusses the studies which have already been conducted on stereotypes, their origins and their mechanisms. The author shows that television, which has been made responsible for the transmission of stereotypes, does indeed generate and consolidate existing stereotypes. Yet, these pre-exist in our minds and they are extraordinarily resistant.
