The 19th century was generally a time of "national construction" in Latin America, with a search for new political and cultural models to orient the construction of the new nations through a symbolic system of arms, flags, hymns and so forth. Chile is an exemplary case here. At the outset, this country's national symbols express a pro-native identity option. But this orientation was very quickly discarded, prompting the author to analyze the construction of national identity at the expense of ethnic diversity.
