After recalling the economic, social and political characteristics of Latin American countries, the authors point out that the theory of dependence and cultural imperialism have long dominated thinking on the ties between cultural identities and communication in this part of the world. They then show that the development of the globalization process and the creation of organizations like Alena have revived certain authors' worries about the risks of cultural homogenization and ideological domination by the countries of the north. Over the past few years, though, these positions have given way to new post-modernist-style postures looking for a new interpretation of the role of popular culture, and a radical reconsideration of the role...
