In 1999, a caricature about the Italian Comunist Party (PCI) allegedly receiving secret funding from the KGB provoked a conflict between the Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema and the cartoonist Giorgio Forattini. Here this affair is analysed as a symptom of current changes within Italian society. The debate around this caricature published in the daily newspaper la Repubblica (Rome) shows the political impact of this kind of satire which is far from more inoffensive mockery. This bitter controversy also brings to light one essential skill now tacitly required of politicians, namely self-mockery. In this context, M.
