Contemporary art, derision and sociology

Derision appeared with modern art and is now part of of contemporary art. It can take three forms - mockery by the artists transgressing the aesthetic values of common sense; the critical derision of the spectators who react by mocking the works or claiming they are nothing but hoaxes and finally the subversion of works when they are integrated into the boundaries of art in the name of contestation. The problem for sociologists is to avoid adopting any of those interpretations in order to avoid being taken in the very game they attempt to analyse.Apparue avec l'art moderne, la dérision est constitutive de l'art contemporain. Elle se présente sous trois formes : la dérision ludique des artistes qui transgressent les valeurs esthétiques de sens commun, au premier rang desquelles l'authenticité ; la dérision critique des spectateurs qui réagissent à ces transgressions par la moquerie ou l'hypothèse du canular ; et la dérision subversive des oeuvres qui sont intégrées aux frontières de l'art au nom de leur pouvoir de contestation.
