Despite the regularly-announced figure of 70% of Tahitian-speakers in French Polynesia, a linguistic survey would probably reveal broad differences in levels of competence among those Tahitian speakers as well as the diffusion of a language which is a mixture of Tahitian and French. The commitment of both local institutions and the French State has conferred prestigious status upon Tahitian but this may be not enough to reverse the tendency regarding the language people speak at home.
