From the seventeenth to the twenty first century, Reunion Island was successively a colony, a department and a region. After a period of discovery and travel narratives depicting the Island as Eden came the period of slavery until its abolition in December 1948. Under the third Republic, the colony experienced an agitated political life dominated by several major figures. After two years of Vichy rule, the island came to a new stage of its history.
