From Bourbon to The Reunion, history of an island (from 17th to 20th century)

From the seventeenth to the twenty first century, Reunion Island was successively a colony, a department and a region. After a period of discovery and travel narratives depicting the Island as Eden came the period of slavery until its abolition in December 1948. Under the third Republic, the colony experienced an agitated political life dominated by several major figures. After two years of Vichy rule, the island came to a new stage of its history. This second half of the twentieth century has brought a Reunion society which has been profoundly modified by social and technological evolution.La gageure consiste en quelques pages à presenter une synthèse de l'Histoire de La Réunion à partir des travaux les plus récents. Du XVIIème au XXIème siècle, l'île passe du statut de colonie à celui de département puis de région. Au temps de la découverte et des récits de voyages décrivant l'Eden, succèdent les temps de d'esclavage jusqu'à l'abolition de décembre 1848. Sous la troisième république, la colonie vit au rythme d'une vie politique agitée et dominée par quelques notables. Après deux années du gouvernement de Vichy, l'île entre dans une nouvelle phase de son histoire. Cette seconde moitié du XXème siècle dessine une société réunionnaise profondément transformée par des évolutions sociales et technologiques
