The paper leaves to one side the legal and economic criteria generally selected to study the AFP in favour of a sociological approach used to analyze the daily work of its journalists. The traditional model of excellence of agency journalism has been called into question by recent economic trends in the information market, hyper-competition and the French state's wish to lessen its financial involvement. Therefore, agency journalists complain about a loss of reference points which hinders their work of classifying information in terms of importance.
