Il Galateo e Vaste

EnGalateo's personality, formed at the lively Accademia Pontaniana in Naples, binds his name to the literary work De situ Japigiae, written in 1507 and edited in Basel in 1558. The interesting work was written with the aim of making the vastness and characteristics of his Kingdom known to King Ferdinand II of Aragon, named "the Catholic". Describing the Salento territory, Galateo focuses on Vaste, passing along important news and advising a Messapic inscription of 3rd century B.C. whose traces were lost. This is one of the earliest finds associated with the ancient Messapic city, which has been studied for a long time, since 1981 and for more than 30 years, by the University of Salento, giving it back rich and impressive. The city visited by Galateo was instead connected to Holy Martyrs' devotion and contracted around the Tower and the Baron's Palace, as a precious store of history.ItLa personalità del Galateo, che si formò presso la vivace Accademia Pontaniana di Napoli, lega il suo nome all'opera De situ Japigiae, scritta nel 1507 ed edita a Basilea nel 1558. L'interessante lavoro venne prodotto con l'intento di far conoscere al re Ferdinando II d'Aragona, detto "il Cattolico" la vastità e le caratteristiche del suo Regno. Percorrendo il territorio salentino, il Galateo si sofferma su Vaste, trasmettendo importanti notizie e segnalando un'iscrizione messapica di III sec. a. C., della quale si sono perse le tracce. Si tratta di uno dei primi ritrovamenti legati all'antica città messapica che, a partire dal 1981e per più di 30 anni, è stata a lungo indagata e studiata dall'Università del Salento, restituendocela ricca ed imponente. La città visitata dal Galateo si presentava invece legata alla devozione dei SS. Martiri e contratta intorno alla Torre e al Palazzo baronale, come un prezioso deposito di storia
