This thesis explores the maternal as a separate and particular subject position. Focussing initially on the poetry of Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath and Adrienne Rich, and then on more contemporary examples of maternal writing, the thesis situates these works within the broader discourses of the maternal.<br /
