Les glands du Chêne sessile (Quercus petraea) germent facilement à des températures allant de 1 à 30°C, l'optimum thermique se situant aux environs de 20-25°C. Ils germent aussi sans apport d'eau pendant leur conservation au froid, même à 0,5°C. La croissance de l'épicotyle est optimale à 20°C, mais elle est fortement ralentie à des températures plus basses. Les températures supérieures à 15°C entraînent souvent la croissance des bourgeons cotylédonaires ou de ceux situés à la base de l'épicotyle et sont la cause principale du développement de plantules à épicotyles multiples.
