Diabetes mellitus is a complex and heterogeneous group of metabolic diseases characterized by a disruption in blood glucose homeostasis. This could result from an autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells or insulin resistance with subsequent beta cell dysfunction.
