Total synthesis of natural products is of contemporary interest in organic synthesis. One of the useful ways to synthesize the natural products is to originate from inexpensive chiral pool compounds abundantly available in nature. In this context, our research group is actively involved in the use of tartaric acid as the four carbon four hydroxy building block in the synthesis of a number of natural products of therapeutic importance. Our strategy relies on the utility of γ-hydroxy amides derived from tartaric acid involving a controlled addition of Grignard reagents and stereoselective reduction.
