CORRELATION BETWEEN ANXIETY AND STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN INITIATING THE DISCUSSION

This research aimed to find out the correlation between anxiety and students’ ability in initiating the discussion and to find out the students’ anxiety level in initiating the discussion at third semester English Department University of Bengkulu academic year 2021/2022. The design of this research is correlation and used descriptive quantitative as approach. The sample of this research was third semester English Department University of Bengkulu, the total numbers of the students were 85 students from A, B and C class. The data were collected by using the questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated by using expert judgments. In reliability obtains by using Cronbach’s Alpha formula in SPSS software. This research uses the table to showed the result of correlation output and percentage the result of anxiety level in form of chart. The result of this research showed that there is a significant negatively moderate correlation between anxiety and students’ ability in initiating the discussion. the correlation value is -0.527. it showed that the correlation direction in this research is negative and the correlation direction in moderate correlation. Then the majority of the students (63/85) were in high anxiety when initiate the discussion. It means that overall anxiety level students of English Department University of Bengkulu are high anxiety in initiating the discussion. Therefore, for the next research, the researcher suggests to conducted correlation study such as; correlation between fear of making mistake and students’ ability in initiating the discussion.
