In this paper we will consider issues relating to the historically low US saving rate and the large current account deficit. The approach is meant to be pedagogical, with an emphasis on clearly illustrating mechanisms behind these developments such that the readers more easily can make up their minds about what the future is likely to bring. The conclusions of the paper are as follows: Even though there are explanations indicating that the US currently should run a current account deficit (see especially Section 4), the tides must eventually turn.
