In the late Victorian era a new type of novel appeared. Dark and creepy, filled with supernatural creatures and twisted, sometimes violent plots, it resembled its Gothic predecessor of 200 years earlier. Building on the standard elements of the Gothic novel, this new fiction pierced the heart of the city. As the new genre brought the terror of Gothic fiction from isolated castles into the streets, it found its first home in the fog-shrouded city at the center of the Victorian age.
